Bresciani North Dakota State University Dept 1000, PO Box 6050 Fargo, ND 58108-6050 Dear President Bresciani, We, the undersigned organizations, are adamantly opposed to Planned Parenthood’s “Safe Spaces” teacher training course and are writing to strongly urge North Dakota State University to discontinue underwriting and supporting the Safe Spaces training course offered to North Dakota teachers and others who work with youths. The Safe Spaces course description states that the purpose of the course is to train teachers and others who work with youth on how to “promote healthy sexuality and relationships”. It is obvious from years of Planned Parenthood classes, courses, and curriculum throughout the nation that Planned Parenthood believes there are virtually no limits to what can be considered healthy sexuality among youth. For example, the inclusivity topic included in the course typically includes the sexual experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender teens, and the course’s concept of “holistic sexuality” would upset almost any parent. We strongly object to NDSU allowing Planned Parenthood to use teachers as an extended form of advertising to show our students how to access their resources—resources that promote widely-contentious ideas like the following. • Promoting sexual behavior for elementary school students and giving examples • Advocating all children, “no matter their age,” have sexual rights (this includes children as young as five years old) • Teaching minors that they do not have to disclose their HIV status when in a sexual relationship • Teaching minors to prepare for “safe sex” when minors are drunk and high • Publicly fighting for the removal of parental involvement in sexual and reproductive health • Teaching all forms of sex at any age is healthy, provided there’s consent NDSU offering credit for Planned Parenthood’s contentious course encourages our teachers to take the Safe Spaces class and become “re-educated” to carry the agenda of Planned Parenthood into their classrooms. Planned Parenthood’s goal is to get teachers to acclimate children to ideas and concepts that are antithetical to North Dakotans’ values, such as the taking of life, how to consent to sex no matter the age, sleeping with multiple sexual partners, and believing they were born in the wrong body. Planned Parenthood’s values are an affront to North Dakota families who maintain their fundamental parental rights to direct the upbringing of their children with their moral, religious, or ethical beliefs. It is the responsibility of families to define “safe and healthy relationships”, not the responsibility of our country’s largest abortion provider. This is why North Dakotans have rejected radical “comprehensive sex education.” Unfortunately, Planned Parenthood is seeking to circumvent efforts that prohibit them from our schools by targeting adults who work with youth. Since comprehensive sex education is not legal in ND, for good reason, Planned Parenthood is training our teachers anyway with what is essentially their comprehensive sex education curriculum. This indirect avenue to our youth also side-steps parental rights and gives educators tools to teach our students controversial information with absolutely no notice or involvement by parents. We believe that Planned Parenthood is an inappropriate organization to be teaching these values to North Dakota teachers and ultimately to our students. This course taught by Planned Parenthood undermines the values of North Dakota families, and specifically, the values of the thousands of residents our organizations collectively represent across the state. For these reasons, we urge you to discontinue your involvement with Planned Parenthood’s Safe Spaces training course. Thank you for understanding our deep concerns on this issue.
